Traditional Espresso or Bean to Cup Coffee Machines for Your Business
Posted on February 12th, 2011 No commentsTraditional Espresso or Bean to Cup Coffee Machines for Your Business
Domestic coffee use has evolved from packets of instant coffee in the kitchen cupboard, to stylish and sophisticated pod and capsule machines. As a result, our expectations of good coffee have been raised, and as a business it is our duty to produce high quality drinks for customers which meet these expectations. So which way do we turn?
Traditional Espresso Machines
Available in various shapes and sizes i.e. 1, 2, 3 and 4 group machines (a group is where water is dispensed from, which passes through the coffee that sits in the group handle. A group handle can be a single or double group, which enables you to dispense either one or two shots of coffee dependent on the amount of coffee place into the handle i.e. usually around 7 or 14 grams) and semi and fully automatic (semi-automatic is where you control the dose of coffee and turn it off when you have enough, fully automatic means that the buttons have a pre-set dose and the machine will stop by its self). These machines usually feature either one or two steam arms for frothing/steaming milk, and one or two hot water outlets.
When you purchase a traditional machine package, they should consist of the following basic items:
• A grinder to grind the coffee
• Knock-out drawer which can sit either underneath the machine or under the grinder, enabling you to “knock-out” the used coffee
• Barista kit which can include such basic items such as a frothing jug, thermometer, pallet knife, chocolate shaker and an espresso shot glass
• Water filter which is connected to a mains cold water feed to prevent build up of lime scale inside the boiler and on the element,
Ideally, you will also need to provide a mains waste connection. The size of machine depends on the size of establishment or how busy you think you will be. The most common one by far is a 2 group fully automatic machine, but some smaller sites will have 1 and larger establishments may have 3 or 4.
These machines are very much about theatre and indeed they are for show as making coffee is very much an art and good barista training is extremely important and becoming skilled at understanding and making good coffee takes time and practice as it is very easy to make a bad coffee. Prices can vary from around £800 to £6000, but remember, you get what you pay for, so make sure that the machine you choose is new and fully warranted, including full barista training and a good support service. The great thing about traditional machines is that there are no major moving parts so less to go wrong.
In more recent years traditional espresso machines have become more advanced, incorporating things such as boiler or group head temperature control facilities which enable you to tailor the temperature of the espresso water to suit the varying brewing temperatures of coffee. Other innovations include automatic steam wands, also known as hyper wands or turbo wands, enabling you to automatically froth or steam your milk perfectly without any human intervention.
Bean to Cup Machines
A bean to cup machine does exactly what it says! The fresh coffee beans are placed inside the machine and on the press of a button the machine automatically grinds the beans and pours both coffee and milk into your cup.
Bean to cup machines, such as Jura coffee machines, are quick and easy, and make quality fresh coffee at the touch of a button. What you need to remember with this type of system is that there are a lot of moving parts so more to potentially go wrong and there is need for daily cleaning which has to be adhered to otherwise your great coffee won’t be so great the following day!
This type of system is ideal for a pub restaurant where staff training can sometimes be a problem; it is also great for convenience stores or petrol stations where a take away coffee station may be required. Some smaller machines require very little installation or training and can be tank fed, so no need for plumbing. These machines will also usually feature some form of de-scale cycle instead of a water filter to prevent scale build-up. It usually takes between 30 and 50 seconds from pressing the button to filling the cup, depending on the cup size and type of drink selection. Some of the higher volume machines can produce two milk based drinks at once, while most will make two black coffees at once, an essential feature for some very busy sites.
As time has passed, even the bean to cup machine has developed, and can now be found to use various combinations which feature fresh beans, fresh milk or an instant/granulated milk, instant hot chocolate and instant coffee.
These various machines are designed to produce anything from 50 cups per day to over 500 per day. The cost of these can vary from under £1000 to well over £10000, so it is important you make the correct choice.
Summary – Traditional Espresso versus Bean to Cup
The traditional machines without doubt are for those who want the theatricality of coffee making. The advantage is that they make great coffee, so long as those making it are fully trained. A combination of machine and thorough training can produce the true Italian coffee experience.
Bean to cup machines are quick, easy and require very little staff training. The machines will roughly produce the same coffee each and every time the buttons are pressed, whether it be 16 or 60 times, but remember, they have to be looked after and cleaned on a daily basis or problems will arise very quickly.

It is very frustrating to learn that one of your prized equipment or appliances at home gets broken. For coffee lovers out there, those people who find it impossible to start their day right without coffee, finding out that their coffeemaker has been damaged would be one of the worst points in their lives. If they have the money to have it fixed right away or buy a new one, then this will not be much of a problem. However, if your budget is not that much, then this can be a disaster.

With the kind of advancements and developments that have happened in the coffee making technology, you would be surprised how your age old method of cleaning coffee machines is not applicable to use for some of the latest models. Secondly, you should know how to do some maintenance check on your commercial coffee machine. You could do this on your own or you could hire a professional to do this for you. The idea is to do regular checking to see if there are some certain parts that need cleaning, repairing or even changing.
Thirdly, you should know what to do when common problems concerning coffee machines occur. There are some equipment problems that users share with the kind of appliances they are using. Oftentimes, damage happens when inappropriate measures are taken to solve even the simplest and most common problems concerning the use of specific appliances.
An example is when the brewing and sputtering of the coffee maker seems to be too slow. One possible major reason is the lime scales that have been deposited in the machine’s vent. In the long run, the vent gets clogged which makes the brewing of the coffee much slower. One of the best ways to solve this is to solve the clogging since this is the reason why the problem is happening in the first place.

Espresso Machines
Posted on December 24th, 2010 No commentsEspresso Machines
Baristas are trained in the art of making the perfect espresso. It requires a lot of patience and practice and is not easy to master. However, there is an easier way. An espresso machine. Espresso machines make espresso a much simpler beverage to create by controlling the temperature precisely.
There are several different types of espresso machines available, each functioning in a different manner. There are piston-driven espresso machines, semi-automatic machines, and automatic espresso machines.
In the Beginning
Espresso came into being when people were looking for a quicker way to make their coffee. In Italy, around 1901, Luigi Bezzera found a way to make hot pressurized water and its steam push through a bed of finely ground coffee. The result was a quick, individual cup of highly concentrated coffee that came to be known as espresso. Bezzera acquired a patent for his machine and in 1903 these first espresso machines were sold in Europe.
These machines were not easy to use. There was no consistency to the espresso produced because the temperature and steam were controlled by the operator, leaving room for a large amount of diversity in the resulting beverages.
In 1935 Illy invented a coffee maker that used compressed air instead of steam, thus solving the problem of exploding espresso makes. His machine gave a more favorable, stable result.
The lever action espresso machine was invented by Achille’s Gaggia in 1945 and still today bears his name. Both the Illeta and Gaggia versions of espresso machines are available on the market today.
Illy continued to expand and simplify his espresso machine by combining the best parts of other makers.Various Types of Espresso Machines
Piston Driven Espresso Machines
Piston-driven espresso machines are more authentic than any other espresso machine. It is the most primitive of the espresso machines. Designed in Italy in 1945, this design requires strong arms to make the espresso.
The piston-driven espresso machine uses a lever that is pumped by the operator to force pressure onto hot water, driving it through the coffee grinds. This pulling down of the handle is how the term ‘pulling a shot’ came into being. The piston driven espresso is also how the crema came to be a part of espresso.
Espresso drinkers who also value authenticity tend to opt for the piston-driven machine. Otherwise you can usually find them as part of a display. Advancements in technology that brought the semi-automatic and the automatic espresso machine made the piston-driven machine obsolete.
Semi-Automatic and Automatic Espresso Machines
Semi-automatic espresso machines are hard to find due to the advanced popularity of fully automatic espresso machines.
Semi-automatic espresso machines and automatic espresso machines both have the hot water delivered using a pump system. However, in a semi-automatic machine the bean grinding, preparing and placing in the machine are all done by hand.
Automatic and super automatic espresso machines require that you only put the beans in. The machine measures the water, regulates the temperature and even grinds the beans to make the espresso. Many true espresso enthusiasts believe that the quality of the espresso is lost in the automation.
Commercial or Home Use
In addition to the types of espresso machines are the uses for the machine. If the espresso machine is intended for home use then the cost is going to be decreased significantly. For commercial use, the cost can skyrocket.
Home espresso makers should be purchased with longevity in mind. The purchaser should have an idea of how often it will be used. If it is going to be used a lot, a low end commercial maker might be a better choice. For occasional use, a home espresso maker will suffice.
Commercial espresso makers can be plumbed to a water source or be manually filled – another cost to consider when looking into espresso makers. The more automated the machine the higher the cost.
Espresso makers come in a variety of types and sizes, all designed to prepare the very best espresso possible. When deciding on an espresso maker care should be taken to get the one that best serves the intended purpose.

Office coffee machines have come a long way in recent years, and many of the UK’s top companies are getting in on the revolution.
To the delight of office workers everywhere, the notion of coffee made from a tin or bad of ground beans is quickly being replaced. Today’s commercial coffee machines offer numerous options, from bean to cup coffee to espresso and more. What is even more surprising is the result that these changes are having on the businesses that provide the machines. When it comes to brew an entire cup of coffee, Tassimo is a wonderful solution. It’s as easy as 1 2 3. Just pull it out of the box, plug it in, fill it with fresh water, insert a T-Disc (Tassimo coffee pod) and press a button! In less than 1 minute, you will hold a fresh brewed cup of coffee. It compact size fits nicely on any countertop.
With measurements of 13 1/4″ x 8″ x 11″, you can place in the middle, pushed back to the side, or – and a personal favorite of many – tucked in a corner.
The Tassimo brews a cup of coffee so quickly it can be compared to instant coffee. But make no mistake here, it does taste like brewed coffee, no instant! There are many advantages to the newer models. One of them is the convenience of the power button and the filter change notice light right on the front of the coffee machine.
It is not only easy to use, but it offers a great variety of flavors and brands coffee. Looking for a short espresso or a cup of French Vanilla, you have the option. Conveniently, you can purchase the T-Discs from most mojor stores and even online. If you purchase one from the Tassimo direct site, you can expect to pay around 0. If you look around, you’ll find this is a pretty decent price for this machine; especially in comparison with others in the same line. Regardless of where you shop, you should be able to get one for under 0. For some, these prices might be a bit steep, especially when compared to a normal coffee pot. However, this unit offers convenience and variety like nothing else you will find.
You no longer have to waste electricity, water, and coffee brewing more cups than you will drink. If you are one who buys coffee outside of the home, imagine how much you will safe when you can make your own ( – a day).
In my opinion, Braun’s Tassimo is a great product for any household. The initial price may be a bit of a shock, but it is worth it in the end; it will save you dollars and time. The convenience and variety of the t-discs will give you plenty to choose from for yourself, and when entertaining guests. Have the entire unit, along with T-Discs, shipped right to your house.
